Your Church Buildings
and Insurance Premiums

The Presbytery of the Northern Plains is available to offer guidance to churches
in finding ways to bring down the cost of insurance premiums.

We understand and are aware that this is a significant
budget item yearly for many of our churches.

Please contact the Presbytery office if you'd like to visit with us
about insurance premium concerns.

Strategies for churches to reduce premiums:

1. Raise Deductible

Higher deductibles can be offset by cost savings on the premiums over time.

2. Invest in Property Improvements
Consider implementing property improvements that will bring down your risk
and notifying your insurer of those updates to lower premiums.

(e.g. Aging Roof, Electrical, Plumbing)

3. Coverage for Functional Replacement Cost

Many current structures cannot be replaced with the same model, as material costs make it prohibitive.

If a total loss should occur, can the congregation’s needs be met by a more affordable building?

Consider changing your replacement value to functional value.

4. Audit Your Coverage Plan

Review policies annually to remove coverage for services or items no longer needed,
such as child care centers no longer in operation or international mission trips.

5. Avoid Small Claims

Don't file claims for small incidents that can be covered by your church budget,
as this can lead to premium hikes or non-renewal.

6. Enhance Security Features

Check with your provider to see if installing security cameras, fire suppression, etc
lowers the costs enough to provide savings over time.
