COM ADOPTS NEW MODEL

At a two day meeting in Carrington in March, the Committee on Ministry (COM) adopted a new model for approaching their work with the churches and leaders of the Presbytery of Northern Plains. This new structure replaces the former liaison program and is effective immediately.

Each member of the committee will serve in two capacities.  She/ he will be assigned to a regional team and she/ he will be assigned to a resource team. Through those sub-groups the COM will seek to strengthen our connections with one another and support leaders and congregations in ministry.PNP COM Regions

There will be three COM regions in the Presbytery and, thus, three regional teams: the Western (convened by Cathy Bliss), the Northeastern (convened by Barb Ault), and the Southeastern (convened by Dale Shook). The primary purpose of the regional teams is to plan and implement a regular program of visiting and maintaining contact with congregations and leaders in their region. Toward that end, they may co-opt non-COM elders willing to help.

There will be four resource teams.  The Mediation Team (convened by Keri Shelton) will respond to situations of conflict or distress. The Commissioned Lay Pastor Team (convened by Dixon Moorhead) will oversee that ministry. The Support for Pastors Team (convened by Nancy Emerson) will have that goal and the Transition Team (convened by Ellen Misalek) will help churches between pastors. Intentional efforts will be made to assure that each of these resource teams has opportunities for training and skill development.

The one recommendation from the COM that will need Presbytery’s explicit approval (at the June meeting) is that the number of COM members be increased from 12 to 15, effective Jan 1, 2011.

The Reverend David Thompson of Jamestown is the new COM chair and summed up his feelings with characteristic brevity: “I like the new model but what I’m really hoping to see is that things get done effectively and efficiently. We have a strong committee and I’m excited to be leading it.”

Anyone with questions is free to call either Dave or your regional convener.
